Description

This Salisbury Steak recipe offers a hearty and comforting meal with tender ground beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. Made with simple ingredients and easy steps, it’s perfect for quick weeknight dinners or relaxed weekend meals that bring the family together.

Ingredients

Scale

Patties

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (gluten-free if desired)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Gravy

  • 2 tbsp plant-based butter or oil
  • 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp natural gelling agent (e.g., pectin, agar)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine lean ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onions, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Gently mix with your hands just until combined to keep the patties tender.
  2. Form and Brown: Shape the mixture into evenly sized oval patties. Heat plant-based butter or oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties on both sides until a caramelized crust forms, then remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Mushroom Gravy: In the same skillet, sauté sliced mushrooms and chopped onions in plant-based butter or oil until soft and fragrant. Add beef broth, apple cider vinegar, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well, then gradually sprinkle in the natural gelling agent while stirring to thicken the gravy smoothly.
  4. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Lower the heat and cover. Simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes to meld flavors and cook patties through.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Transfer Salisbury Steak and mushroom gravy to plates. Optionally garnish with freshly chopped parsley or green onions to brighten the dish before serving.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the patty mixture to keep them tender and juicy.
  • Ensure patties are well browned for deeper flavor.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for the best gravy earthiness.
  • Add natural gelling agent slowly to avoid clumps and create a smooth gravy.
  • Allow patties to rest after cooking to retain juices.
