Description

Easy Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits that are soft, flaky, and warm with a tender crumb and buttery flavor. Made from simple pantry ingredients, these golden biscuits bake in under 30 minutes and pair wonderfully with sweet or savory dishes. Perfect for any meal and customizable to suit dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter (plant-based), cubed
  • 1 cup plant-based buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (natural)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to evenly distribute the leavening agents for a uniform rise.
  2. Cut in the Butter: Using a pastry cutter or clean fingers, cut the cold unsalted butter (plant-based) into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits, ensuring flaky layers.
  3. Add Buttermilk Mixture: Combine plant-based buttermilk with apple cider vinegar (natural). Pour into the dry ingredients all at once and gently fold with a spatula until just combined, avoiding over-mixing to keep biscuits tender.
  4. Knead and Shape: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Fold the dough onto itself 2-3 times to build layers, then press out again before cutting.
  5. Cut and Bake: Use a biscuit cutter or round glass dipped in flour to cut out biscuits. Place them close but not touching on a baking sheet. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • Keep ingredients cold to achieve flaky texture.
  • Do not overwork the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
  • Use a sharp cutter and press straight down without twisting.
  • Warm the baking sheet before baking for a golden bottom.
  • Serve biscuits immediately for best freshness; reheat wrapped in foil at 300°F (150°C) for 10-15 minutes.
