Description

Enjoy perfectly crispy outside and tender inside Authentic Churros coated with cinnamon sugar. This quick and simple recipe uses pantry staples and plant-based natural ingredients to create golden-fried delights perfect for dipping or serving with sweet accompaniments.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (plus more for frying)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (natural)
  • 1 tsp natural gelling agent

For the Coating

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder

Optional for Serving

  • Powdered plant-based sugar
  • Warm plant-based chocolate sauce (natural)
  • Fresh berries
  • Plant-based caramel sauce (natural)
  • Creamy vanilla custard (plant-based)
  • Warm grape juice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Bring water, a pinch of salt, apple cider vinegar (natural), and vegetable oil to a gentle boil in a saucepan over medium heat. Once simmering, remove from heat immediately and stir in all-purpose flour and natural gelling agent until a smooth, cohesive dough forms.
  2. Heat the Oil for Frying: Pour vegetable oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed pan and heat to about 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer to maintain correct temperature for even cooking and minimal oil absorption.
  3. Pipe the Dough: Transfer dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star-shaped nozzle. Pipe 4-5 inch long strips directly into the hot oil and cut with scissors to desired length as you go.
  4. Fry Until Golden and Crisp: Fry churros in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crisp on the outside, about 3-4 minutes. Remove with slotted spoon and drain excess oil on paper towels.
  5. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: While still warm, toss churros in a mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon powder. The heat helps sugar stick for the classic delicious coating.

Notes

  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F for the perfect crispy exterior without burning.
  • Dough should be smooth and firm enough to hold shape when piped.
  • Use a star nozzle for churros with the traditional ridged texture.
  • Drain fried churros well on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve churros hot for best contrast of crispy outside and soft inside.
