Description

A quick and flavorful Jamaican Cabbage recipe featuring crisp green cabbage, vibrant carrots, and a smoky savory touch from smoked turkey bacon. Enhanced with fresh herbs, mild heat from Scotch bonnet pepper, and balanced with vegetarian Worcestershire sauce and apple cider vinegar (natural), this dish is perfect as a side or a hearty main that brings Caribbean flair to your table.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 4 cups green cabbage, finely shredded
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 1 small Scotch bonnet pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh thyme leaves, 1 tablespoon

Protein

  • 6 slices smoked turkey bacon, sliced

Seasonings & Sauces

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (natural)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Shred the green cabbage finely and julienne the carrots into thin strips. Mince the garlic and dice the onion. Carefully slice the Scotch bonnet pepper very thinly to avoid irritation.
  2. Cook the Smoked Turkey Bacon: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the smoked turkey bacon and cook until crispy and aromatic, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the bacon and set aside, keeping the oil in the pan.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Using the reserved oil, sauté the garlic, onion, and Scotch bonnet pepper until fragrant and slightly softened, about 2-3 minutes. This creates the flavor base for the dish.
  4. Add Vegetables and Seasoning: Stir in the shredded cabbage and carrots, mixing well to coat them in oil and aromatics. Sprinkle the fresh thyme leaves, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Continue cooking and stirring regularly until the cabbage is tender yet crisp, around 6-8 minutes.
  5. Final Flavor Boost: Pour in the vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural) and apple cider vinegar (natural). Toss everything together and cook for another 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Return the crispy smoked turkey bacon to the pan and mix well before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh, firm vegetables for the best texture and color.
  • Avoid overcooking the cabbage to maintain a tender-crisp texture.
  • Handle Scotch bonnet pepper with care; wear gloves or wash hands thoroughly after cutting.
  • Adjust apple cider vinegar according to your taste preferences for brightness.
  • Use a wide pan or skillet to cook the vegetables evenly without steaming.
  • For variations, add bell peppers, red cabbage, or fresh diced tomato during cooking.
