Perfect for any occasion, this versatile pie is easy to make, delicious, and ideal for those seeking a wholesome, comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup chilled plant-based butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3 to 5 tablespoons cold water

Filling

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced firm tart apples (e.g., Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup natural brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (natural)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (natural)
  • 1/2 teaspoon natural gelling agent (e.g., pectin or agar)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup grape juice

Optional Toppings

  • Plant-based milk for brushing the crust
  • Plant-based vanilla ice cream
  • Plant-based whipped cream (natural)
  • Cinnamon (natural)
  • Warm cider syrup (natural)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Combine all-purpose flour and chilled plant-based butter in a bowl, cutting the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add cold water gradually, mixing until the dough forms a ball. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Make the Filling: In a large bowl, toss peeled and sliced apples with brown sugar (natural), cinnamon (natural), nutmeg (natural), natural gelling agent, fresh lemon juice, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, and grape juice. Mix well so apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit while rolling out the crust.
  3. Assemble the Pie: Roll out half of the chilled dough on a floured surface, then line a pie dish with it. Pour and spread the apple filling evenly inside. Roll out the remaining dough and cover the pie, sealing the edges by crimping. Cut small slits on top to allow steam to escape during baking.
  4. Bake the Pie: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Optionally brush the top crust with plant-based milk or grape juice for browning. Bake the pie for 45 to 50 minutes until the crust is golden and the filling bubbles.
  5. Cool and Serve: Let the pie cool completely so the filling sets properly with the natural gelling agent. Slice and serve with optional plant-based vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a sprinkle of cinnamon for an enhanced experience.

Notes

  • Use a blend of tart and sweet apples for a more complex flavor and texture.
  • Handle the dough gently to maintain flakiness avoid overworking it.
  • Optionally pre-cook the filling slightly to reduce excess moisture and prevent sogginess.
  • Keep the dough well chilled to avoid shrinking and to maintain texture during baking.
  • Monitor oven temperature carefully to ensure crust browns without burning while the filling cooks through.
